Summary This survey consisted of a test and questionnaire survey conducted for the purpose of ascertaining the state of kanji (Chinese characters) learning by junior high school students and identifying the factors affecting kanji learning.

(1) Kanji writing test based on 939 junior high school-level kanji
*Limited to textbooks used in school Japanese (Kokugo) classes
About 100 questions for a total of seven types of tests were prepared using the following:
 - For the first-year junior high school students, Kanji taught in the first year of junior high school
 - For the second-year junior high school students, Kanji taught in the first year of junior high school
 - For the third-year junior high school students, Kanji taught in the second year of junior high school

Unlearned kanji was included for the first-year junior high school students.

(2) Questionnaire of attitudes to and actual state of Japanese (kokugo) learning
