Summary This survey was conducted to capture the actual state of childrearing life in the homes of guardians of children in kindergarten and nursery school and their attitudes toward discipline and education. Benesse has conducted surveys for this purpose in the past (in 1997 and 2003), and this survey was designed to allow analysis by comparison across years.

The characteristics of this survey may be summarized as follows

1. Appreciates changes over time
2. Allows an appreciation of differences between school years among children in kindergarten and nursery school
3. Appreciates differences in childrearing by region
4. Adds new items to accommodate changes in the childrearing environment

*The data provided consist only of the responses from mothers of kindergarten-age children (first, second, and third year in kindergarten/nursery school, etc.)

Sample Size Number of responses: 6,131 (number of questionnaires distributed: 8,238, response rate: 74.4%)

*The data provided consist only of the responses from 5,884 mothers (3,069 in the Greater Tokyo Area, 1,743 in regional city areas, and 1,072 in regional rural areas)

*Of these, 3,069 responses by mothers were mainly analyzed.
*The responses from mothers in regional city areas and regional rural areas were used for comparisons between regions.

Things related to selecting a kindergarten or nursery school for the child, time the child spends in kindergarten/nursery school, expectation and satisfaction level about discipline and education in kindergarten/nursery school, etc.

Level of education respondent desires for the child, after-school lessons, educational expenses (per month) per child, etc. 
 
(5) Regarding respondent and family members
Level of satisfaction with life; spouse (the child’s father); joy of childrearing; opinion on childrearing; respondent’s and spouse’s age, occupation, occupation type, time respondent and spouse comes home, respondent’s and spouse’s highest level of educational attainment; financial comfort; family structure, etc.
