Summary Modern Japanese children grow up with a sense of abundance and little experience of the opposite. In other words, today's children know the joy of having everything they need and never having to go without. They grow up in a world where everything is taken for granted, and they cannot imagine a shortage. Hence, today’s children are not mindful of wastefulness. Rather, according to one way of thinking, sensitivity to mottainai (waste) is being lost.
How can we teach children to be mindful of wastefulness in today's affluent society? This is an important new issue in children's development.

With this in mind, this survey aims to ascertain how children living in today's society feel about their affluent environment and measure their sensitivity to wastefulness by focusing on the family as an important part of their environment.
