Summary  The purpose of this project is to explore current perceptions of familial dietary habits by taking a multifaceted look at the actual state of changes in children's foods preferences especially regarding traditional food culture

Sampling Procedure 500 (one out of every 50) of the 25,000 elementary schools in Japan were randomly selected, so that the sample would include an equal number of students from each prefecture. Sample questionnaires were sent to the target schools, requesting their cooperation. Responses were received from 3,257 fifth-year students across 35 schools in Japan; these were selected as participants.

Major Survey Items  Whether traditional foods are served in the household, whether traditional foods are prepared at home, types of foods served in the household on special occasions, whether the respondent’s mother invests a lot of effort into preparing gourmet foods, respondent’s culinary likes and dislikes, frequency at which the family eats out and/or consumes instant foods, respondent’s mother’s attitude toward food, food-related discipline in the household, helping eating, happiness, respondent’s appetite and hunger, breakfast intake, people with whom the respondent shares meals, identity of the household member whose food preferences are the most prominently reflected in the main menu items, extent of the respondent’s mother’s vs. father’s involvement in household chores and work, mother's age, presence/absence of kitchen appliances at home, self-image,family structure,gender, etc.
