Summary  This survey attempted to answer the following question: How do today's children, who were born in an age when there is a scientific explanation for nearly everything, perceive mystical phenomena such as ghosts, jinxes, fortune telling, and supernatural phenomena? The survey also sought to ascertain how children relate to the mystical/occult world.

 Status of respondent’s knowledge of Hanako-san ghost stories, presence/absence of a place at the respondent's school where Hanako-san appear, respondent’s assessment of whether Hanako-san really appear
 Whether the respondent has had any strange experiences, whether the respondent likes shows about supernatural phenomena such as ESP, hypnosis, UFOs, etc., whether the respondent has tried to test the existence of occult powers
 Whether the respondent believes in the existence of mystical phenomena and items and/or jinxes

(2) Good luck charms and divination
 Promise rings: whether the respondent has ever worn a promise ring, respondent’s reason for wearing a promise ring
 Amulets: (omamori) whether the respondent has an amulet, number of amulets the respondent possesses, whether the respondent believes that amulets are effective, method by which the respondent acquired their amulet(s), status of respondent’s old amulets
 Fortune-telling: whether the respondent reads magazines’ fortune-telling columns, respondent’s assessment of the accuracy of fortune telling

(3) Prayer
 Whether the respondent believes in the existence of gods and Buddha, whether the respondent prays to gods and Buddha, whether the respondent has a Buddhist altar, whether members of the respondent’s household worship daily, whether the respondent visits graves, respondent’s encounters with death

(4)Demographic items
 Grade,gender,Number of family members,whether the respondent has ever cohabitated or currently cohabitates with their grandparents, respondent’s personality self-evaluation, respondent’s happiness level
