Summary To what extent are today's junior high school students aware of their rights? The Convention on the Rights of the Child came into effect in Japan in 1994, but its contents are still not well known, and there seems to be some opposition to it. In 1998, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a scathing report on the current situation in Japan.
If we consider children to be "subjects of the exercise of rights," how do junior high school students think about their rights, and how do they want to use them? This survey asks children what they consider to be an "infringement of [their] rights,” where "the boundary between rights and selfishness" lies, and which "rights they want to exercise and their willingness to exercise them." The survey focuses on the right to self-determination, the right to express one's opinion, and privacy, as emphasized by the Convention. The survey sample included two schools that are dedicated to promoting the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
