| Summary | In 1993 we began an annual survey of households using the government's educational loan programs, and this is the seventh of the series. The primary objective of the survey is to capture the financial burden of households with school attendants. It investigates, however, not only such households' educational expenses but income, housing loans, savings, and ways of financing children's education in order to reveal an entire picture of the household finance and its relation with the educational expenses. The survey is characterized by (1) covering the entire nation, (2) being directed only to those households with school attendants, (3) capturing educational expenses throughout a year, (4) investigating all the educational expenses for elementary school children and above, and (5) analyzing the financial burden by number of children, type of school, and residential arrangements. |

(1) Type of school children attend, and tuition and other fees: sex, type of school, school year, and school attendance for children for whom Respondent used the state's educational loans; this year's expenses (tuition and other expenses); educational expenses outside school; rent and other living expenses (for children who live outside home). (2) Expenses for sending children to higher school: uses of educational loans (for sending children to higher school or keeping children schooled once accepted); number of schools children challenged; expenses for sending children to higher school (examination fees and other expenses for taking entrance exams, amounts paid to the school for attendance and to other schools challenged; [if living outside home] housing expenses). (3) School attendance and educational expenses: number of children; type of school; attendance; this year's sum of school expenses; total amount of money sent to children; feeling of financial burden; methods of securing educational expenses; spending items for saving. (4) Household income: number family members; sex, age, occupation, and annual income of main earner; annual household income; housing loans; annual housing loan payment. (5) Childbearing and childrearing expenses: period when Respondent felt financially burdened by children; necessity of systems financing childbearing and childrearing (other than educational loans); reasons for lower birth rates (burden of childrearing, difficulty in balancing children and work); conditions for balancing work and childbearing/rearing (better facilities and services, reduced expenses for using facilities and services). |
