| Summary | In Japan, the budget of the household is burdened with children's educational expenses. It is even said that the money needed for children's education is amounting to the level where a family can no longer feel affluent, however, the reality of the burden of educational expenses has not been well-investigated. children's educational expenses are burdening In 1993 we began an annual survey of households using the government's educational loan programs, and this is the second of the series. The primary objective of the survey is to capture the financial burden of households with school attendants. It investigates, however, not only such households' educational expenses but income, housing loans, savings, and ways of financing children's education in order to reveal an entire picture of the household finance and its relation with the educational expenses. The survey is characterized by (1) covering the entire nation, (2) being directed only to those households with school attendants, (3) capturing educational expenses throughout a year, (4) investigating all the educational expenses for elementary school children and above, and (5) analyzing the financial burden by number of children, type of school, and residential arrangements. |

(1) Schools children attend, and tuition and other fees: number of children, sex of the children/ schools children attend/ annual tuition, number of children who live away from their parents/ amount of money the parents sent to those children who do not live with them/ rent/ location of the house rent, educational expenses needed for attending schools (expenses for commuting, other expenses needed for school), educational expenses needed for other than attending regular schools (cram school tuition, expenses for home tutors, correspondence courses, reference books, fees for taking other types of lessons), the number of children who attended high schools and schools higher than high school level after April 1994. (2) Expenses for sending children to higher school: schools children have entered/ number of male and female students who have entered higher schools, total number of schools children have applied and taken the entrance exam, expenses needed for sending children to higher schools (application fee, other expenses for taking the entrance exams, including transportation and accommodation fees, amounts paid to the school for attendance, amounts paid to other schools challenged, housing expenses, including home furnishing expenses, sources of expenses needed for sending children to higher schools, changes in the schools challenged because of financial reasons, the contents of the changes. (3) Financial arrangements in the household for sending children to schools: weight of the burden of educational expenses, methods of securing educational expenses, cut off expenditure, whether in Japan one's educational background decides his/her worth and social position, the advantages of children receiving advanced degrees. (4) Status of the family and family budget: number of family members; members of the family; family members, who have income and the relationship of those members with the children at school age; relationship between the primary earner in the family and the children at school age, sex, age, occupation, income of the primary earner in the family; annual household income earned by the rest of the family members; housing loans/ monthly and bonus-month installments for paying off the housing loans; savings (savings balance, securities balance, amount of monthly savings). |
