Summary This survey was designed to account for the fact that, although the integrated selection systems introduced mainly in urban areas for the purpose of correcting disparities between high schools for a period of time are being abolished one after another, hardly any data has been collected on the effects of the selection systems. This study was conducted for the purpose of acquiring as much empirical data as possible. This study will serve as valuable historical data as the integrated selection systems are abolished.

This survey drew comparisons, particularly between the rapidly disappearing integrated selection systems and the widely observable single-school-testing-type independent selection systems, as to what effects high school entrance exam systems have to junior high school students’ academic-path consciousness and their daily activities.

The question items mainly consisted of junior high school experience, the actual situation of behavior in daily life, living condition, high school entrance path, desired future path, attitude toward high school currently attending, and attitude to various issues.
Data Type quantitative research
quantitative research: micro data
Universe First-year students of high schools in integration-selection-system school districts and independent- selection-system high schools in West Japan.
Unit of Observation Individual
Sample Size Integrated-selection-system high schools
1 high school: 315 valid responses from 320 students (98.4%)

Independent-selection-system high schools
7 high schools: 1,765 valid responses from 1,801 students (98.0%)
Date of Collection 2007-05 ~ 2007-07
May to July 2007
Time Period 2007 ~ 2007
Spatial Unit Japan
West Japan
Sampling Procedure Non-probability: Purposive
Neighboring regions in which both integrated selection systems and independent selection systems could be observed were selected and then a survey was conducted of first-year students who had just enrolled by making requests to the high schools.
Mode of Data Collection Self-administered questionnaire: Paper
First, questionnaire forms were mailed to teachers in charge or principals at each high school. Homeroom time, etc. was used to conduct group self-administered survey in classrooms. Once completed, questionnaires were collected in the classrooms and then all were returned by mail.
