Summary When bullying emerged as a social problem once again in the summer of 2012, following the suicide of a male junior high school student in the city of Otsu, in Shiga Prefecture, NHK conducted "The Survey on the Way of Life and Attitudes of Junior and Senior High School Students" and their parents across the country. This is the survey, the fifth edition after 10 years (the previous editions were conducted in 1982, 1987, 1992, and 2002.)

This survey aimed at identifying the true state of the lives and values of junior high and high school students through a wide range of topics such as their school life, relationships with their friends and parents, mental condition, and views on society. Each edition of the survey also included specific questions that reflect the social condition at the time. The 2012 edition included new questions about experience with bullying in the current school year, the use of the Internet, the role of men and women, and others. The term "Internet" in this survey includes the use of email.
